Former President Barack Obama announced Sunday that he has tested positive for Covid-19.
“I’ve had a scratchy throat for a couple of days, but am feeling fine otherwise,” he said on his official Twitter account.
Obama also said that his wife, former first lady Michelle Obama, has tested negative.
“Michelle and I are grateful to be vaccinated and boosted,” the former President said in a Facebook post.
“It’s a good reminder that, even as cases go down, you should get vaccinated and boosted if you haven’t already to help prevent more serious symptoms and giving COVID to others.”
Obama, 60, had recently returned to Washington, DC, after spending much of the winter in Hawaii. He tested positive in DC, a person close to him said.
The diagnosis makes Obama the second US President known to contract the virus after then-President Donald Trump announced he tested positive in October 2020, which was before vaccines were widely available in the US.
Obama has been a champion of public health measures throughout the pandemic. Last August, he dramatically scaled back his 60th birthday party on Martha’s Vineyard due to concerns at the time over the Delta variant.
Currently, only 2% of the US population, about 7 million people live in a county with a “high” Covid-19 community levels, according to data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The rest are at “low” or “medium” community levels, areas where there’s no recommendation for masking or where immunocompromised people and those at high risk for severe disease are advised to take extra precautions against Covid-19, respectively.
President Joe Biden said in his first State of the Union address earlier this month that the US is moving “forward safely” into a less disruptive phase of the pandemic. During his speech, the President outlined his plan to emerge from the Covid-19 pandemic.
“Thanks to the progress we have made this past year, Covid-19 need no longer control our lives,” Biden said as he acknowledged that Americans are “tired, frustrated and exhausted” with the pandemic.

The Government has released GH₵17 million as compensation to farmers affected by the Avian Influenza, commonly known as bird flu disease [a viral disease that infects poultry and other birds].
The amount was part of a total of GH₵20,105,718.03 meant to cater for compensation, stamping out/decontamination/disposal materials, and a roll-out of a communication plan on dealing with the disease.
The recipients comprise of 167 affected farms from July to December 31, 2021, and 37 outstanding affected farms from 2015 to 2018.
Affected farmers will be paid GH₵30.00 for a matured bird, GHS20.00 for a pullet, GHS10.00 per chick, GHS80.00 for a bag of feed and GHS10.00 for a crate of egg.
Meanwhile, compensation for farmers whose farms have been affected by the disease this year, were to be taken care of in a second tranche after the disbursement to the farmers from 2015 to 2021.
Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto, Minister of Food and Agriculture (MoFA), said: “As of now, Government has released GHS20,105,718.03 which is meant for the following activities; stamping out/ decontamination/disposal, compensation to currently affected farmers and some outstanding compensation from 2015 -2018, and roll out of a communication plan.”
At a media engagement to provide an update on the bird-flu situation , he said: “About 17 million cedi will go into compensation, of which the process starts immediately.”
Farmers are supposed to collect their certificates of destruction from their regional Veterinary Officers, and proceed to the Finance and Administration Unit of MoFA to commence the process of compensation.
The Minister said, the Government had also given approval for the immediate recruitment and deployment of 550 veterinary professionals, in addition to the procurement of vehicles, motorbikes and laboratory equipment to contain future occurrences.
He urged poultry farmers to intensify biosecurity and improve upon management practices and avoid restocking of their farms until certification from the Ministry to do so.
Dr Akoto noted that the Ministry had commenced biometric registration of poultry farmers to have a comprehensive national database of farmers.
He said: “This is all part of efforts in modernising poultry farming in the country and enhancing the accuracy of data for planning, targeting for support and payment of compensations when the need arises in the future.”
He called on the Chairman of the Ghana National Poultry Farmers Association (GNAPF), Mr Victor Oppong Adjei to encourage members of the Association to participate in the exercise.
Mr Adjei, on behalf of the affected farmers, expressed gratitude to the Ministry for facilitating the release of the money from the Government, and was particularly happy for the inclusion of outstanding farmers into the payment of the compensation.
He indicated that the biometric registration would be of help to poultry farmers in the country, and the industry at large in monitoring activities of farmers.
He pledged the Association’s support in making the exercise successful, adding that it had been one of the challenges they longed to be resolved.
As at October 2021 when the Cabinet memo was approved, 261,000 birds, 1,243 bags of feed, and 1,447 crates of eggs had been destroyed as a result of the disease.
However, by December 31, 2021, which the Ministry used as the cut off point for the payment of this compensation, the total number of birds affected by the Bird flu was 554,638. The quantity of the feed destroyed had increased to 1,701.5 bags and 2,548 crates of egg were affected.
The Ministry noted that since February 2, no outbreak of the disease had been recorded in the country.

Early on Saturday, air raid sirens sounded in several cities across UKRAINE, with report of heavy firing in Mykolaiv, The New York Times reports. Meanwhile, explosions were reported on Friday in Lutsk, near the Polish border, in Dnipro, a major stronghold in central-eastern UKRAINE, and in Ivano-Frankivst, in the south-west, Ukrainian authorities say.

Chris Brown wants an apology.
The singer is demanding an apology after a woman accused him of sexual assault and sued him for $20 million.
“Damn y’all owe me an apology.. won’t hold my breath waiting for it though,” he wrote Thursday on his Instagram Story.

In January, an anonymous woman—known only as Jane Doe—filed a $20 million lawsuit against the R&B superstar. She claims Chris drugged her before raping her during a yacht party on Miami’s Star Island in December 2020.
But Chris says it’s all an attempt to extort him. On Wednesday, he shared a voicemail from his accuser, who was heard pleading to see him again after he ignored her.
“Well, you’re giving me mixed signals. You’re like reading my messages and stuff and you haven’t blocked me yet so I’m guessing you don’t hate me,” she said in the voice message, which he posted on his Instagram Story. “I just wanna see you again, I mean, you just answered the phone and then you just hung up. Like, just let me know. Like, if you want me to leave you alone I definitely will, but I really just want to f**k with you again.”
The woman, who is a professional choreographer and dancer, also sent Chris a series of racy messages, including nude selfies. In the texts, she asked Brown if he had ecstasy and told him he was “the best d**k I’ve had.”
The accuser’s lawyer, Ariel Mitchell, confirms to TMZ that the woman sent Chris the texts and voicemail. She has withdrawn from the case because she says the woman had not informed her about the messages.
The “Iffy” singer has vowed to sue his accuser. “Me and my team are taking legal action on this situation,” said Chris. “You don’t play with people lives like that.”
The Miami Beach Police Department has received the messages between Chris and the accuser and is investigating the case.

Ukraine is to withdraw all of its forces from UN peacekeeping missions in Africa and Europe so they can be redeployed to fight invading Russian troops at home.
Its biggest mission was in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where about 250 Ukrainian troops had been serving.
They will soon leave along with their eight helicopters and other military equipment.
The UN says it is reviewing the impact of the Ukrainian government’s decision and praised their “strong contribution” in DR Congo and other countries.
A spokesman for Monusco, the UN’s peacekeeping mission in DR Congo, told the BBC that talks were under way on how to manage the withdrawal.

Tanzania’s health ministry has launched a yellow fever vaccination drive after an outbreak was recorded in neighbouring Kenya.
Minister Ummy Mwalimu has directed provincial referral hospital officials to start administering the vaccine to all those travelling out of the country.
Kenya’s health ministry announced the yellow fever outbreak last week.
Fifteen people were reported to have contracted the disease and three people confirmed dead.
Ms Mwalimu has directed experts who are supervising health issues at borders to look at possibilities of issuing electronic vaccination certificates to deal with the challenge of fakes.
She has also called on Tanzanians to take precautions so that the disease does not get into the country and to ensure that the environment is clean to stop mosquitoes from breeding.

Senegal’s President Macky Sall, who is the current head of the African Union (AU), has spoken to his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin to urge a “lasting” ceasefire in Ukraine.
He is the second African leader to reveal that he has spoken to Mr Putin – the other is Egypt’s President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi.
In a tweet, Mr Sall said: “As president of the African Union, I am delighted about my talk this morning with President Putin to press for a lasting ceasefire.
“I commend him for listening and for his willingness to maintain dialogue for a negotiated outcome to the conflict.”
Mr Sisi’s office said his talks with Mr Putin focused on the Ukraine crisis, and on strengthening relations between the two nations.
After Russian troops entered Ukraine on 24 February, the AU issued a statement calling for Ukraine’s territorial integrity to be respected and for international law to be upheld.
The West African regional bloc Ecowas said it condemned the invasion.

Ed Sheeran has serenaded London’s High Court in an attempt to prove he did not copy portions of his 2017 hit Shape of You from another artist.
The star is accused of lifting his song’s “Oh I, oh I, oh I” hook from Sami Chokri’s 2015 single Oh Why.
In court, he sang elements of Nina Simone’s Feeling Good and Blackstreet’s No Diggity to illustrate how the melody is commonplace in pop music.
“If you put them all in the same key, they’ll sound the same,” he explained.
Sheeran denies having heard Mr Chokri’s song and rejected the suggestion that friends might have played it to him before he wrote Shape of You in October 2016.
His upbeat pop track became 2017’s best-selling single and remains the most-played song of all time on Spotify.

But Sheeran’s royalties – estimated to be about £20m – have been frozen since Mr Chokri and his co-writer Ross O’Donoghue claimed copyright infringement in 2018.
Lawyers for the pair played the court excerpts from the Shape of You recording sessions as they built their case.
In one recording, Sheeran could be heard saying he needed to change the “oh I” melody because it was “a bit close to the bone”.
“We thought it was a bit too close to a song called No Diggity by Blackstreet,” the star told the court. “I said that… we should change it.”
Asked whether his final melody bore a similarity to Chokri’s song, he added: “Fundamentally, yes. They are based around the minor pentatonic scale [and] they both have vowels in them.”

Andrew Sutcliffe QC, representing Mr Chokri and Mr O’Donoghue, asked: “It was a phrase you already had in your head after listening to the chorus of Sam’s song, wasn’t it?”
“No,” Sheeran replied.
The singer was also accused of being an “obsessive music squirrel” who consumed music “voraciously” and would have been aware of Mr Chokri’s music.
“I’m a music fan, I like music, I listen to music,” Sheeran said. But he insisted he had “disappeared for the whole year” in 2016 and was “not plugged in” to the UK music scene.
Sheeran was repeatedly asked who had come up with the “oh I” phrase, but explained it had been a collaborative effort with his co-writers Steve Mac and Johnny McDaid.
“It was all of us three bouncing back and forth in a circle,” he said. “That was how it originated.”
“Three people could not create the germ of the melody,” suggested Mr Sutcliffe.
“Why can’t three people create a melody?” Sheeran replied.
The court also heard how Sheeran tweaked the first version of Shape of You to remove elements that were similar to the Bill Withers song Grandma’s Hands and TLC’s No Scrubs.
“Your approach is take it, change it and make lots of money, isn’t it?” Mr Sutcliffe asked the star.
“No,” he replied, later adding that a “musicologist went over the song [Shape of You] and found similarities and we changed the similarities”.
Sheeran pointed out that he had sought clearance from TLC’s writers, although they had not responded by the time his song was released. They were later given a credit on the track.
The star disclosed that Shape of You was originally envisioned for Little Mix or Rihanna, and that he had not wanted to release it on his multi-platinum Divide album.
“I thought this song clashed with Castle On The Hill. It doesn’t fit with the rest of the album,” he said. “I didn’t want to put it out and I was subsequently proved wrong.”
The singer briefly became irritated when a snippet of an unreleased song was mistakenly played to the court.
“That’s a song I wrote last January. How did you get that?” he asked, glancing at his lawyers. “I want to know how you got that.”
It was later explained that some of the music played to the court was coming from Steve Mac’s personal laptop, and the wrong folder had been accidentally accessed.
Sheeran and his co-authors launched legal proceedings in May 2018, asking the High Court to declare they had not infringed Mr Chokri and Mr O’Donoghue’s copyright.
In July 2018, Mr Chokri and Mr O’Donoghue issued their own claim for “copyright infringement, damages and an account of profits in relation to the alleged infringement”.
Mr Sutcliffe accused Sheeran and his co-writers of issuing what he called a “slap suit” intended to “intimidate” his clients with the burdensome cost of a legal defence “until they abandon their claim”.
“No I wanted to prove I was right,” he replied. “I’m trying to clear my name here.”
The case continues.

Consumer giants including McDonald’s, Coca-Cola and Starbucks have joined the list of firms halting business in Russia due to the invasion in Ukraine.
McDonald’s said it was temporarily closing its roughly 850 restaurants in Russia, while Starbucks also said its 100 coffee shops would shut.
McDonald’s said there was “needless human suffering unfolding in Ukraine”, and Coca-Cola called the war “tragic”.
All three firms said they would continue to pay their staff.
McDonald’s chief executive Chris Kempczinski said in a memo to staff: “The conflict in Ukraine and the humanitarian crisis in Europe has caused unspeakable suffering to innocent people.” The company said it was “impossible to predict” when it would reopen.
“As a system, we join the world in condemning aggression and violence and praying for peace.”
Companies have been under pressure to act as Russian violence against civilians has escalated.
#BoycottMcDonalds and #BoycottCocaCola had been trending on Twitter on Monday and over the weekend respectively.
Dozens of well-known firms including Netflix and Levi’s have already suspended sales or stopped providing services in Russia amid severe sanctions imposed by Western allies.

McDonald’s established its presence in Moscow in 1990, as the Soviet Union was opening its economy, drawing thousands for its burgers and fries.
As tensions with the West increased in 2014 over Russia’s annexation of Crimea, some of its restaurants were shut as part of an investigation into food standards, which many saw as politically motivated.
The closure now likewise carries symbolic weight, and is likely to influence other firms.

Apparently, all the criticism Russia is getting for invading Ukraine is causing a lot of hurt feelings at the Kremlin.

The Executive Director of Global Action for Women Empowerment (GLOWA), Rosemond Ewoenam Atutornu, has called on stakeholders, particularly traditional authorities to join the fight against gender-based violence by redefining their thinking towards women.
In a forum to commemorate International Women’s Day on Tuesday at the Kubekrom community number 2, Rosemond Atutornu noted that its high time traditional authorities allowed women to take leadership positions in the community.
“For instance, the local authorities sometimes don’t see a girl being violated or defiled as a crime. They see it as something they can settle in their own community. And when you begin to refer them to the law or Ghana’s constitution, then they come to the realisation of the responsibility they have on their desk,” she said.
She added that, “local authorities should start educating people in their various communities or even in their home by changing the way they look at things. They shouldn’t think women don’t have positions or occupy certain positions even at the chieftaincy. They should look at what particular role women in the community can play and sensitise their own community members first.”
Every year, the world commemorates International Women’s Day on March 8 to reflect on women’s achievements, advocate for action to address persistent and widespread inequalities and violence against women.

Life could be difficult such that you need to go the extra mile to achieve your vision.
That explains the life of a level 400 student of the University of Ghana who double as a bus conductor popularly called “Mate” here in Ghana. She offers Information Studies and Psychology at Ghana’s premier university, University of Ghana.
Jocelyn Akorfa Atsoribo is a mother of two who has tried suicide on several occasions, owing to the difficulties she has faced in life.
She became pregnant at the age of 17 after Junior High School education in Hohoe in the Volta Region of Ghana.
Regardless of the difficulties she has faced over the years, she is determined to work hard and improve the lives of herself and her family.
According to her, the bus conducting journey began approximately six months ago when she met Kweku, a bus driver who takes her home from the market on a regular basis whenever she goes there to buy things.
She pointed out that she was into food business, but her landlord advised her to cease selling in front of the building because his sister wanted to use it for something else.
‘I started almost six months ago, I was doing a good businesses in front of my house; my landlord gave me the place, but later came saying that his sister will use the place for other businesses. I was home and thinking of what to do because I had bills to pay, my kids are there and my school fees is also another issue.”
“On my last day to the market, the driver’s “mate didn’t show up so I helped him throughout the day and told him I will work with him. He said I can’t do it but I insisted he gives me three days and see; if i fail to perform she can sack me”, an emotional Akorfa said.
She went on to describe some negative feedback she received about her work, but was not bothered
“My landlord went behind me to tell the driver to prevent me from working with him, but I told the driver, I will do the work and cater for my needs”, she opined.
On combining her education with the job, she said it’s been very demanding, but believes she will thrive at the end of the tunnel.
“At times I go for lectures, but sometimes i don’t. I try reading…its ok doing this because at least it put something [money] on the table”
Ms. Atsoribo, who spoke with zeal, claimed that one of the most difficult aspects of the job was dealing with derogatory words from passengers.
“Definitely you will meet some bad nut, but with this work you have to be tolerant though I lose my cool sometimes but I mostly ignore them”.
Akorfa’s employer, Kwaku Boafo (trotro driver), described her as “a very hardworking woman” and supportive.
However, Akorfa’s biggest concern right now is how to pay for her final year’s costs, hoping some philanthropists will come to her aid.
She had previously relied on her meager savings and loans, but the current economic environment has made issues difficult for her.

181 Ghanaian nationals have been evacuated from Ukraine as of the midday of March 8 with 88 of them currently transiting through Romania, Hungary and Poland.
This was contained in a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, there have been reports of some Ghanaians refusing evacuation after the government has purchased tickets and paid for their COVID-19 test because they had previously expressed willingness to be evacuated.
In view of this, the Ministry is “therefore entreating only Ghanaians who are willing to be evacuated to confirm their participation, so as to avoid the dissipation of scarce public funds.”
“In the case of those who refuse to be assisted to return home, the Government of Ghana’s obligations towards them ceases after they have been provided with 2 nights’ hotel accommodation,” portions of the statement read.

The World Initiative for Soy in Human Health (WISHH) and the Ghana National Egg Campaign (GNECS) have launched a national egg promotion campaign dubbed ‘Eggstra-O’ with the theme Eggstra-O nutrition for all to educate the Ghanaian public about the nutritive and functional benefits of eggs for persons of all age groups.
The launch, which was planned to coincide with this year’s international women’s day, saw leaders and members of the Ghana National Eggs Campaign Secretariat (GNECS) and the Women in Poultry Value Chain (WIPVAC), AgriHouse Foundation, Women in Agriculture (AWIA), and African Women in Animal Resource Farming and Agribusiness Network (AWARFA-N) come together to celebrate the contributions of women in agriculture towards development and food security.
The Programme Manager- Africa Division for American Soy Association (ASA) and World Initiative in Soy for Human Health (WISHH), Theresa Fang, says the campaign seeks to “encourage the consumption of eggs through education to boost Ghana’s poultry sector and to increase access to protein-rich foods.”
The Eggstra-O campaign will run till the end of December 2022 and will include targeted training for stakeholders in the poultry value chain across the country.
The campaign will also execute public education-focused activities such as a roadshow (dubbed “The Eggnite Roadshow”) and institutional visits in the Greater Accra, Central, Eastern, Volta, Western, Upper East and Upper West regions. Institutional educational outreaches will also be conducted to select schools, hospitals and religious bodies. The goal is to promote egg as a nutrient-dense protein source for every one which will in turn translate into a a thriving poultry industry.
The Ghana National Egg Campaign Secretariat was established after the end of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the American Soy bean Association (ASA) funded project-AMPLIFIES in 2019.
The aim is to expand the trade in eggs, create awareness through myth busting and education on the benefits eggs and encourage the consumption of eggs.
